Want a STATIC homepage in WordPress?

About me: I am an everyday Joe Schmoe that enjoys spending way too much time on the internet. Internet technologies such as XHTML, PHP, CSS, and FLASH are my best friends and hobbies. They are daily learning experiences and I enjoy sharing what I learn with others.

Creating your new static homepage for WordPressCreating a static homepage in WordPress is fairly simple and we are here to help. If you can write a post, then you can create a page. So, it is time to get started on the quick and easy setup. The first step is to create a page to serve as your new home page. Let’s call it something like “Home Page.” Pretty intriguing, right?

1. In your WP control panel, select the Pages tab.
2. Click on Add New.
3. Give the page a title like “Home Page.”
4. Create the content for your home page just like posting.
5. Hardest part -Click the Publish button.

While you are still in the Write Page subpanel, add/create a second page:

1. Title it “Posts” (or whatever you want to call the page that your recent posts will appear on).
2. You DO NOT need to have any Page Content for this one.
3. Again, the hardest part -Click the Publish button.

Now you are ready tell WP where to find your new home page.

Pages are created so now time to set them in WP-ADMIN. 1. In the Settings panel on the left navigation select Reading.
2. Now change the front page to your new home page, select “A static page” for Front page display.
3. Select “Home Page” from the Front page drop down menu.
4. Make sure you tell WP which page to use to display your recent posts. It directly underneath where you selected your static homepage. From the Posts page drop-down select the “Posts” page you created earlier and wallah!
6. Click Save Changes.

View your site. CONGRATS! “Home Page” should now be your new static homepage. Gotta love the friendliness of WordPress.

Remember: Put nothing on the posts page. No content other than the title. WordPress will dynamically list your recent posts on this Posts page. Set the number of records you want displayed on the same admin subpanel “Reading.” Don’t forget those MORE tags when writing articles to keep your post page friendly. The homepage will still fall under you theme but all content will be static except for what you hard code in like the last two articles that were written with some nice pictures. It is limited only by your creativity.

This is Z’s tutorial on setting a WP static homepage. There are other ways but this is the friendliest.

Happy Coding,
